What is the program?

The goal of the Nova Scotia Mentorship Program is to pair up experienced Nova Scotia community coaches with upcoming, committed coaches who are looking to grow in their roles, to increase the opportunities for coaches to work with those in other sports, see what other contexts look like and to increase the success rates of upcoming coaches.

This year, we will be offering a sport specific mentorship program in addition to our multi-sport mentorship. During the 2019 Engagement Tour, it was discovered that coaches are looking for opportunities to share sport specific information and there is a need for recruitment of coaches. Athletes who are looking to become coaches may also take part in the sport-specific program as long as they meet the criteria listed below. The new sport-specific mentorship program has been designed to help with recruitment of coaches and aid athletes with their transition into coaches. If coaches would like to participate in the sport-specific program, they must identify a mentor/mentee from their region who has applied for the program and who they would like to be paired with for the duration of the program.

Who is this program for?

Mentees: Mentees must be currently coaching in addition to showing interest and motivation for continuing to develop as a coach. Mentees may be a new coach. If part of the sport specific mentorship program, the mentee can be an athlete transitioning to a coach. Ultimately, mentees should meet the following criteria;

  • Coach athletes at least 4-6 months of the year
  • Completed some NCCP Training in their sport or multi-sport
  • Support from their Community Sport Organization
  • Commit to participation in the full program: May 1st, 2020 - April 30th, 2021

Mentors: Mentors are community and provincial level coaches who have the time and willingness to share their experience with upcoming coaches in their region.  Mentors are paid an honorarium for the mentorship program. Multi-sport mentors will be paid $250 every 6 months. Sport-specific mentors will be paid $150 every 6 months. Mentors should meet the following criteria;

  • Experienced coach in their sport (5+ years coaching)
  • Completed a minimum of Competition Introduction training in their sport.
  • Commit to participation in the full program: May 1st, 2020 - April 30th, 2021

Both Mentors and Mentees will be required to attend formal mentorship training on April 26th, 2020 at the NSCC Ivany Campus following the Atlantic Coaches Conference. The training will be provided to all mentorship program participants free of charge and all coaches will receive NCCP Professional Development points for attending.
