Canada Announces Wheelchair Basketball Squads for London 2012

Canada has announced its men’s and women’s Wheelchair Basketball rosters for the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

The squads were chosen from a pool of 37 athletes who attended a week-long selection camp from 9-13 January in Las Vegas, Nevada in the USA.

The 12-player men’s team will be led by veteran Patrick Anderson, who averaged 20.4 points and 12.4 rebounds per game at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, where Canada won silver.

Of the 12 players, 11 are returnees to the senior national team and nine have Paralympic Games experience, including Dave Durepos, David Eng, Joey Johnson and Bo Hedges – all of whom should nicely complement Anderson on the court.

“Our goal is to win the gold in London, and to do that we’ve got competitions lined up against the best teams in the world – definitely  all top-five teams,” said men’s team’s head coach, Jerry Tonello. “And we plan on pushing our athletes a lot harder over the next eight months in terms of fitness and tactical preparation.”

Meanwhile, the women’s programme named its preliminary roster of 14, which will be cut down to 12 athletes when the players regroup in June in Winnipeg.
Janet McLachlen, who averaged 25 points and 7.4 rebounds per contest at the 2010 World Championships, leads the mix of players on the women’s side. Of the 14 players, 11 are returning to the senior national team and six have Paralympic Games experience.

The team last medaled at the Paralympics in 2004 when it took home bronze. The previous three Games it won the gold.

“We have a good mix of experienced players and less experienced players that are really hungry to win,” said women’s head coach Bill Johnson.
