Lohnes wins judo gold
January 26, 2012
Add another accolade for Bridgewater’s Whitney Lohnes.
Lohnes was victorious Tuesday night, winning gold at the Commonwealth Judo Championships in Cardiff, Wales.
The 19-year-old defeated Alice Coppleman of Australia in the final of the junior women (under-48 kg) event. Lohnes won all three matches at the championships, two by ippon including the final. There were seven competitors (two from Australia, two from England, on from Scotland and one from Wales) in her category. Lohnes was the lone Canadian in her event.
Lohnes, who turned 19 on Jan. 11, captured the 2010 Canadian under-20 junior championship and earned a bronze at the same event last year.
She’s also a bronze-medal winner at the Canadian national judo championships and at the Pan-American judo championships.
Lohnes also won gold at last February’s Canada Winter Games in Halifax.
